Imagine a woman buys a house in Lagos several years before getting married. After the wedding, her husband moves in. It becomes their family home. Over the next fifteen years, they raise children there, renovate the kitchen, replace the roof and extend part of the building. Some improvements are paid for from his income, others from hers.

But that should not be confused with saying that every dispute involving a premarital property has a simple answer. What happens to the property during the marriage can matter, particularly when divorce proceedings, financial contributions and competing claims arise.
